I Choose Today...

To remember its not the food!

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We have friend from another part of the world and when we talk to them and say “Happy Thanksgiving” they  respond with, “Oh yes, Happy Thanksgiving.” At that response, I remember that Thanksgiving is a USA holiday. We, as a melting pot of people, have learned to mix our Thanksgiving with different traditions. Yet we each try to create our own traditions to remember what we are thankful for. In my family we have a special pudding (date nut pudding) that we make, and as our family grows we watch the face of a newcomer to the family, to see if they like it or not. My sister-in-law, Roann,  told a visitor, “Even if you don’t like it, pretend you do because you’re not a George unless you say this is so good.” In our family, our oldest grandson reads the 23rd Psalm and then we hold hands in a circle and go around the room and each person says one thing they are thankful for. This Thanksgiving, as we went around the circle, my grandkids said, “I am thankful for family.” It’s not the food – it’s being together and enjoying the

to let everyday be like Christmas.

Joyce and I are going through a Bible plan together and each day is like Christmas morning to me. Growing up as a little boy, I remember well the excitement that would start to build at Thanksgiving. In those days, you waited until the day after Thanksgiving to put up your Christmas decorations. Our Christmas would begin with getting the Christmas tree. I know it’s hard to believe, but we could buy a tree for $7.00. They were in the front yard of Mrs. Miller’s house. I remember one year that I had $5.00 in my pocket from delivering newspapers and Mrs. Miller let me purchase one of her trees for the $5.00 I had. This was before cell phones and I suddenly realized I had no way to get it home!  And on top of all this, I still had newspapers to deliver. I remember finishing my route and then getting my brothers to help me put the tree on a sled and drag it home. Just writing this makes me excited for Christmas to come. We can carry the joy of Christmas every day by spending time with the Lord and reading His words of joy. One of

to enjoy a bluebird house….

Hello, my friend. I love to watch birds and see where they fly. They don’t seem to have a care in the world. They spend a lot of time looking for food and a place to find shelter. A few years ago, Al Mitchel made Joyce and I several bird houses and one of them was a bluebird house. I love bluebirds – they are so beautiful. When Al brought the bluebird house to us, he looked around and chose the place he thought would be best and hung it close to the house so we could watch it. Once completed, Al grinned in a mischievous way while looking at the puzzled look on my face. As he walked away, he said, “Just watch it, but don’t touch it. In a few weeks you will have a family of bluebirds.” So, every day I would go to the window and look at the birdhouse he had hung. After a while, I got too busy and I forgot about it.  One Saturday morning about a month later, I was drinking a cup of coffee and remembered that I hadn’t been keeping watch. So, I got up from my chair and looked

to seek the Lord while praising Him.

This morning while having my devotions and seeking the Lord, I was reading Psalms 66:16. “Come and listen, all you who fear God, and I will tell you what HE did for me. For I cried out to Him for help, praising Him as I spoke.”  This is a powerful thought!  When I’m in a battle, seeking the Lord, the thought of praise is not usually on my mind. But, this morning I did this. I started by confessing my heart, and then thanked Him. In doing this, I have the right heart attitude to take this, as well as my fear and hopelessness, and placing it at the feet of Jesus. Verse 19 says, “But God did listen! He paid attention to my prayer.” And, here is my praise in verse 20.  “Praise God, who did not ignore my prayer or withdraw His unfailing love from me.” What a blessing this is and I pray this will encourage you, too. Seek the Lord while praising Him! Smile, God loves you right where you are. He knows your heart!

to make joy more than a “Sunday Event.”

Good morning, my friend. I love Luke’s account of “The Ascension” in Luke 24:50-53. “Then Jesus led them (the disciples) to Bethany, and lifted up His hands to heaven. He blessed them and was taken up to heaven. So they worshiped Him and then returned to Jerusalem filled with great joy. And they spent all of their time in the temple, praising God.” (NLT) Acts 2:46,47 “So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily these who were being saved.” The joy of the Lord is what people will see in us. It’s not just a Sunday event.
