I Choose Today to Worship God Through my Work

In my previous blog post, we explored the beautiful practice of Towdah (תוֹדָה) – giving thanks to God for His provisions and blessings. Taking time to reflect on His goodness helps us realign our perspective, especially during challenging seasons. Today, let’s delve into another dimension of worship, deeply woven into our daily lives: Avodah (עֲבוֹדָה).

Avodah, in its essence, goes beyond words of gratitude—it encompasses our very actions and efforts. Just as we express thankfulness through listing God’s blessings, we are also called to worship Him through our labor and service.

This concept of Avodah, rooted in the Scriptures, reveals that from the very beginning, God designed our work to be a form of worship unto Him, Genesis 2:15: “The Lord God took the man and placed him in the Garden of Eden, to work [וְלַעֲבֹד, vela’avod] it and to guard it.” Here, we see that even in the pristine environment of Eden, God assigned Adam the noble task of cultivating and caring for the garden—a sacred duty that was not merely about physical labor, but a means of glorifying God through stewardship and diligence.

As we reflect on the concept of Avodah—worship through work—it’s crucial to consider how we can practically apply this principle in our daily lives. The apostle Paul’s exhortation in Colossians 3:23 echoes the essence of Avodah: “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” This mindset transforms mundane tasks into sacred opportunities to honor God.

Whether we’re CEOs, entrepreneurs, pastors, janitors, mothers, or farmers, our attitudes about our work matter greatly to God. Each task we undertake, when done with excellence and a thankful heart, becomes an offering of worship to our Creator.

I need to keep this kind of worship at the forefront of my mind. I would love nothing more than study God’s word and encourage people in the Lord all day long… but that is not what the Lord has for me right now (maybe never). I need to remind myself that the best way I can worship and honor Him is to work my job with excellence, with the right attitude and thankful heart.

Let’s challenge ourselves to approach work—not just our professions, but every task we undertake—with a renewed perspective of worshiping the Lord. Whether it’s sweeping floors, crunching numbers, or caring for patients, let’s infuse our efforts with purpose and passion, recognizing that Avodah invites us to  worship God in His redemptive work through our daily vocations.

Today, commit to working heartily, as for the Lord and not for men (Colossians 3:23). Let’s make excellence and a thankful heart our standard, knowing that every task, no matter how small, can be a meaningful act of worship. Embrace your role with diligence and joy, knowing that by honoring God in your work, you are fulfilling a sacred calling. May our lives be a testament to the transformative power of Avodah—worship through work.
