I love words—maybe that’s one reason I love God’s Word so much! David captures this same love for God’s Word, expressing awe and wonder through his writing.
In Psalm 119:175 (MSG), David ends his heartfelt prayer with these powerful words:
“Invigorate my soul so I can praise You well; use Your decrees to put iron in my soul.”
I love the way this translation puts it:
“Invigorate my soul.” To invigorate means to strengthen and give energy. Think about a time you’ve felt invigorated—maybe after spending time at the beach, hearing an inspiring sermon, or listening to a meaningful song. In those moments, you’re energized, ready to take on the world, to fight the good fight, and to step into whatever God is calling you to.
David’s prayer is that God’s principles, instructions, and truths would empower him to live with energy and purpose. He’s saying that being invigorated by God’s Word gives him the strength to praise God, face challenges, and do the work God has set before him.
“Your decrees to put iron in my soul.” To me, iron reflects both a fortification and steel. One represents preparation, and the other, action. Fortifying is about mental and emotional preparation, getting ready for the road ahead. Being steeled is about stepping into action with bravery and determination.
David’s pattern is clear: he prepares himself mentally and emotionally by immersing himself in God’s Word. From there, God’s Word instills boldness and perseverance—giving him the resolve to act courageously.
David’s example inspires me. It makes me want to dive deeper into God’s Word—not only to be invigorated with strength and energy, but also to be fortified for whatever God places before me and steeled with courage to act.
Imagine what could happen if more believers followed David’s example. Imagine the strength and purpose our children could discover by embracing God’s Word the way David did. It fills me with hope—not just for others, but for myself as well.
This is just one verse from God’s Word, and it has already taught me so much. I can’t wait to see what else God wants to reveal through His amazing Word!
A Prayer for Invigoration and Strength:
Lord, thank You for the gift of Your Word! I ask that it would invigorate, fortify, and steel us to do what You’ve called us to do. May we live with energy, purpose, and courage, always ready to step into Your will. We praise You for Your goodness and the power of Your Word. Use it for Your glory, Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Take a moment this week to immerse yourself in God’s Word—whether through a quiet devotional, studying scripture, or praying through a psalm like David’s. Ask God to invigorate and strengthen you for what lies ahead. Write down one area in your life where you need to be fortified or steeled with courage, and let His Word prepare your heart for action.
