I Choose Today...

I Choose Today to Have Balance

How often do you and I get so busy doing normal things, that we neglect our relationship with Jesus and others? I know I am guilty of this. Luke shares a situation that addresses this predicament:

“…Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.” But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”” Luke 10:39-42 NLT

As I was reading the story of Mary and Martha, a thought came to me. Was Jesus telling Martha to not get caught up doing everything for everyone and find balance (like Mary had)? He was pointing out what is best for us all, regardless of whether we are men or women, that the best thing for us is to have balance. Taking time to take care of our own bodies, souls, and spirits.

I was having a conversation with a friend of mine about finding balance. It was mentioned that when we are balanced, then we don’t do that we become depleted, bitter, not at our best to come alongside those God puts in our sphere. How true that is!

It also shows us another point about having balance. We do have a responsibility to demonstrate that balance to those who are watching; who are going to copy the tone we set.

This is very intriguing.  So the next time you and I put busyness in front of our time with the Lord and with our loved ones, let’s think of Martha and Mary’s examples and choose to have balance.

Take a moment today to evaluate your own balance. Are you spending enough time nurturing your relationship with Jesus and those you love? Decide on one practical step you can take to create a healthier balance in your life. 1. I have always struggled with feeling like I have to stay busy to be accepted. This is a great reminder that the Lord wants us to just sit at His feet and worship sometimes. There is no better place to be! Thank you for this reminder!
