I Choose Today to Wait with Purpose

How does one wait well?

Waiting with purpose is a healthy way to approach our waiting, but that’s often easier said than done.

Scripture is full of people who had to wait:

Abraham waited until he was 100 to see God’s promise fulfilled.

Joseph waited over a decade as a slave and prisoner before stepping into his God-given destiny.

The Israelites wandered for 40 years before entering the Promised Land.

And God’s people waited for generations for the greatest promise of all, the coming of Jesus, the Messiah.

Waiting is not unique to us in our time; it has always been part of God’s story with His people. What matters is not just that we wait, but how we wait.

As Charles Spurgeon reminds us, “If the Lord Jehovah makes us wait, let us do so with our whole hearts; for blessed are all they that wait for Him. He is worth waiting for. The waiting itself is beneficial to us: it tries faith, exercises patience, trains submission, and endears the blessing when it comes. The Lord’s people have always been a waiting people.”

So we wait with confidence, assurance, and boldness, trusting that the Lord is guiding us through the waiting, shaping us for His purposes and His glory.

David understood this kind of waiting. While being pursued by a madman who wanted to kill him, he wrote:

“Wait patiently for the LORD. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the LORD.” (Psalm 27:14)

I want to wait well. I want to learn and grow in my waiting. I want to allow God the space to develop and refine in me what He knows I will need for what lies ahead. I want to wait with purpose.

“Lord, guide us in our waiting. Show us where we need to grow and develop the tools needed to do Your will, for Your purposes. We want to glorify You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Waiting with purpose is not passive. It is a holy posture, one that builds our faith, strengthens our trust, and aligns our hearts with God’s will. As we see throughout Scripture, waiting is never wasted when we place it in God’s hands.

So as we move through our own seasons of waiting, let’s choose intentionality over impatience, faith over fear, and expectancy over discouragement, trusting that God is always at work, even when we cannot see it.

Today’s Step: Open the Door to Purposeful Waiting

Today, choose one area where you are waiting, a prayer, a decision, a relationship, or a dream that feels delayed.

Quiet your heart, and open the door to Jesus in that space.

Say honestly before Him:

“Lord, I open this door of waiting to You. Teach me what You want me to learn here. Strengthen my faith. Align my heart with Yours.”

Then ask Him one simple question:

“What do You want to form in me while I wait?”

Write down what comes to mind, and hold it before Him throughout the week. Remember, waiting is not empty time when you invite God into it.

  1. Oh, I needed this today! I am in a season of waiting…actually a couple of seasons of waiting. So, I ask the Lord to give me the understanding that I need to rest in His timing, knowing that this time is not wasted, it is a time for me to grow in my trust of His plan in my life. He is a good Father, a faithful provider, my anchor, my strength.
