I Choose Today to Venture Beyond the Familiar

I live outside the greater DC area. It is a small, tucked away place where it is quiet, peaceful, stunningly beautiful, and dare I say, magical. It is tempting to stay here in my bubble of bliss, of utopia, and never go out of my area again.

But moving around so much has taught my husband and myself to get out and explore the area and see what it has to offer. Even though we love where we live, we enjoy seeing the different cultures, people, food, and beauty in other areas around us.

But there are people in our area who don’t explore and are content to stay in their bubble of bliss. This became apparent when I took a friend to the airport in DC. She grew up in my area, but rarely leaves it to explore the city. I took her to places she had never seen before, places I frequent. She was surprised by how easily I navigated my way without even a GPS. We went to a fun diner and had a wonderful meal in a neighborhood she had never experienced. It was fun to show her the city she spent her life near but never explored. But I also found it sad to know she had been missing out on something special-the different people, cultures, food, and beauty-by staying in her comfort zone.

We tend to do this same thing with our church family and friends. We don’t get out and experience life outside of the walls of our utopia, or familiar, our comfortability. We don’t allow the Lord to lead us and show us new things He has for us because we get too comfortable, too complacent in our lives and in our bubbles, we don’t truly live the intended life God has for us.

God never intended for us to stay in one place—physically, spiritually, or emotionally. He has called us to grow, to explore, to reach beyond the familiar by going into all the world and proclaim His Good News. But He also promises adventure—if only we are willing to see it:Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? (Isaiah 43:19). If we stay in our small, comfortable corners, we risk missing out on the incredible things He wants to show us and the people He has placed in our path.

What if we asked Him to open our eyes to where He wants to lead us? What if we chose today to step outside of our comfort zones and experience the fullness of life He has planned for us?

Maybe you need to go to a different store in a different town or explore a new city and what it has to offer. Before you head out, ask the Lord to open your eyes to see His creation and other image bearers as He does. Let it be a great opportunity for adventure as the Holy Spirit leads you to new places and new possibilities.

It is exciting, isn’t it?

  1. This spoke to me because I do love the little bubble I live in. I need the Lord to help me expand my life so I can have opportunities to be a testimony outside my comfort zone.
