Have you ever found yourself holding onto something that you know is weighing you down—fear, anxiety, guilt—but felt too paralyzed to let it go? If so, you’re not alone. Many of us cling to chains God never meant for us to bear. The good news is that God is a Deliverer, and He longs to set us free. Today, let’s explore how His promises invite us to cry out to Him and experience His transforming power.
““Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress. He led them from the darkness and deepest gloom; He snapped their chains.” (Psalms 107:13-14).
He delivered them from their distresses! What a promise! So why do we hold onto our chains, our fears, anxieties, addiction, tendencies? Do we think our chains will go away on their own, as Pharaoh did when he waited an entire day to ask for deliverance from the frogs? When asked by Moses when he (Pharaoh) wanted to be delivered from the plague, ““Do it tomorrow,” Pharaoh said.” (Exodus 8:10a).
How often do we do the same—putting off deliverance until ‘tomorrow,’ even when we’re overwhelmed by our burdens?
What are we waiting for? Why are we procrastinating? God wants to deliver us! “Indeed, the “right time” is now. Today is the day of salvation.” (2 Corinthians 6:2b).
God is in the business of deliverance, transformation, and restoration. Isaiah 61:3 describes this so well saying, “To all who mourn in [Zion] Israel, He will give a crown of beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair. In their righteousness, they will be like great oaks that the Lord has planted for His own glory.”
Today as I was preparing what God has placed on my heart, I wrote down my own prayer of deliverance and juxtaposed it with my trust in what He can and longs to do for me:
- Fear and give me courage (Joshua 1:9)
- Shame and give me empowerment (Isaiah 61:7)
- Discouragement and give me encouragement (Psalm 42:5)
- Oppression and give me Your anointing (Isaiah 10:27)
- Self-loathing and give me a deep revelation of Your great love and adoration for me (Psalm 139:14)
- Abandonment and give me a place to belong in Your family (Ephesians 2:19)
- Ignorance and give me Your wisdom, discernment, and understanding (James 1:5)
- Laziness and give me the vision for Your purpose to co-create with You (Proverbs 16:3)
- Depression and give me Your joy (Psalm 30:11)
- Anxiety and give me Your peace (Philippians 4:6-7)
- Despair and give me Your mercy and grace (2 Corinthians 12:9)
- Torment and give me true freedom through Christ Jesus (John 8:36)
He wants us to cry out to Him for deliverance and He will answer us because He loves us and wants to set us free. So, “Let them praise the Lord for His great love and for the wonderful things He has done for them. For He broke down their prison gates of bronze; He cut apart their bars of iron.” (Psalms 107:15-16).
“Lord, I praise You for being my Deliverer, the One who hears my cries and answers with love. Thank You for breaking the chains of fear, shame, and discouragement in my life. I worship You for Your faithfulness and rejoice in the freedom You offer. You are my refuge, my strength, and my Savior. May my life reflect the beauty, joy, and praise that You so graciously give. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
What chains are you holding onto today? Take a moment to reflect on the areas of your life where you need God’s deliverance. Write down your own prayer, asking Him to exchange your burdens for His freedom and joy. Then, meditate on the promises of Isaiah 61:3 or Psalm 107, trusting that God’s heart is to restore and transform you. Don’t wait for tomorrow—today is the day to cry out to Him and experience His deliverance.
