I Choose Today to See God in the Ordinary

Have you ever wondered if God is moving in your life, but you just didn’t notice? What if He’s been passing by in ordinary moments, and we weren’t paying attention?

But what if we’re looking in the wrong places?

See, in Scripture, God rarely shows up the way people expect. Samuel heard His voice, but didn’t recognize it at first (1 Samuel 3). The disciples were just going about their normal workday when Jesus happened by and called them to something greater (Matthew 4:18-20). And the woman at the well? She was just doing her daily chore, completely unaware that an encounter with Jesus was about to change her life forever (John 4).

God passes by in the ordinary—but are we paying attention?

I’ve had moments where I almost missed Him.

• At a gas station, I noticed a woman sitting in her car at the pump. The Holy Spirit whispered, You’re going to fill her tank. A moment later, she tearfully asked if I could put gas in her car. Without hesitation, I filled it up. She didn’t say thank you. She just drove away. And you know what? That had to be okay. God didn’t ask me to do it for recognition—just obedience.

• At a car dealership, I was minding my own business, getting some work done, when the Holy Spirit nudged me: Talk to that man. My first thought? But I don’t even know what to say! Then I saw his shirt—it said Mo Ministries. That was all I needed. I started a conversation, and before I knew it, we were talking about everything from family struggles to homeschooling. And then—out of nowhere—he said, I don’t know what you do for a living, but I know what you should do: give encouragement and wisdom to others.

I just about fell over.

At the time, I had been wrestling with what God was calling me to. That conversation confirmed what He was already telling me. A total God appointment.

• On a plane, I just wanted to close my eyes and rest for the short flight home. But the Holy Spirit nudged me: Talk to the girl next to you. I literally argued with Him, right up until the moment I finally gave in and said, Hey, how’s it going?

Turns out, she was scared of flying. I told her I used to be too, and that prayer had helped me overcome it. That led to an entire 90-minute conversation about faith. Even in my reluctance, God still used me.

God is passing by. The question is—are we paying attention?

So, what about you? Have you ever had a “random” thought that turned out to be exactly what someone needed?

Has the Spirit of God ever nudged you to do something, and you brushed it off?

What if that “coincidence” wasn’t random at all?

Here’s the thing: Miracles get attention, but it’s encounters that change lives. If we’re always looking for burning bushes and parted seas, we might just miss Jesus standing right in front of us.

So today, I choose to see God in the ordinary.

How about you?
