(We will return to reviewing God’s requirements (Micah 6:8) next time)
I want to highlight here our understanding of the Sabbath. It is indeed a rhythm that we need to find the beat of.
On the seventh day, God rested, right? But God doesn’t get tired, so why did He designate a day to rest? I believe (at least in part) it was to establish a rhythm of reorienting ourselves to Him.
Part of God’s creation is this day of reflection in order to remember what God did for us during the past six days, what struggles/trials we are currently working through, and how God is faithful in the day-to-day activities of our lives.
It reminds me of another work analogy. I work in an agile environment where the cadence of our work happens in a time-box called a sprint. This is when the work gets tackled, but when the sprint is over, no matter if the work is complete or not, we stop work, gather to review the work, and do a retrospective with our Product Owner of what went right, identify some blockers, and what can change. Then we start a new sprint, carrying on the same cadence. This is so we can course correct, celebrate work well done, and remember lessons learned along the way.
This is the same rhythm God has set for us. We sprint all week, being busy, going about life and the problems that come up, sometimes even making headway in our work. But on the Sabbath, we are supposed to gather with our Product Owner to reflect on all that He has done for us this past week.
This allows us to glean lessons learned, identify the wins and blessings as they happen, and honor the Creator of the universe by thanking Him for all He has done for us!
What an amazing thing God has set up for us! Now, if we only take the time to stop work long enough to have retrospection with God, instead of staying in sprint mode. That leads to burnout.
We need to find God’s rhythm. We need to stay agile. Let’s find it together!
“Lord, help us find the rhythm of honoring You with our retrospection with You. We want to be on beat with Your rhythm, not in a constant state of sprint. We want to set aside time as holy. Help us understand what this means and how to accomplish it. Thank You for Your constant training of our lives. We want to honor You with it. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
“On the seventh day God had finished His work of creation, so He rested from all His work. And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when He rested from all His work of creation.”
Genesis 2:2-3 NLT
Take a moment this week to intentionally plan your Sabbath. Set aside specific time to rest, reflect, and connect with God. Consider what practices help you reorient yourself to Him—whether it’s prayer, reading scripture, or simply spending quiet time in His creation. Share your Sabbath plans or reflections in the comments below and let’s support each other in finding and maintaining this divine rhythm in our busy lives.
