I Choose Today to Honor a Legacy

Most of you don’t know the backstory of how I Choose Today began.

Back in 2023, my uncle and I started doing devotionals together on the Bible App. For about five or six months, we would read the same devotional and then write down our thoughts and reflections. It became a special rhythm for us. Since he lived in another state, it gave us a way to stay connected through our shared faith.

This uncle has always held a special place in my life. He was instrumental in my coming to know the Lord. In fact, he introduced me to the man who led me to Christ almost forty years ago. So those devotional exchanges were more than just reflections on Scripture, they were moments of connection, encouragement, and spiritual family.

After several months of corresponding through the Bible App, my aunt and uncle came to visit me here in Maryland. During that visit, my uncle told me something that caught me completely off guard.

He said, “I started a blog.”

Naturally I assumed he meant for himself, so I asked, “You started a blog for you?”

He smiled and said, “No. I started a blog for you and me.”

My immediate response was, “I don’t want to do a blog.”

Starting a blog wasn’t even remotely on my radar. But my uncle had a bit of a go-get-’em spirit about him. And in a way only God could orchestrate, the Lord used his willingness and initiative to start something that would end up changing my life, and, by God’s grace, touching the lives of others too.

We started the blog together, and after a few months he stepped back from writing. But by then, the seed had already been planted.

Today, I Choose Today exists because my uncle was willing to act on a simple idea.

Last night, after a long battle with cancer, my uncle went home to be with the Lord.

And as I reflect on his life, I realize something beautiful:

God is still using his obedience.

My uncle may no longer be here physically, but the impact of his faithfulness continues. This ministry, and others he helped start, will keep reaching people long after he is gone.

When God gave him the idea for this blog, my uncle couldn’t possibly see all the lives that might be encouraged on the other side of his obedience.

But God could.

That realization encourages me deeply. It reminds me that obedience is rarely about seeing the full outcome. Often it is simply about saying yes to the small prompting God places on our hearts.

Seeds planted in faith can grow far beyond the life of the one who planted them.

That is the kind of legacy I hope to leave one day, a life where simple acts of obedience become something God continues to use long after my time here is done.

But today, I simply want to honor the man who helped start this journey.

The man who believed in me when I didn’t see it in myself.

The man who said yes to an idea that would eventually become I Choose Today.

Uncle, you will be deeply missed.

But the legacy of your faith continues.

And every time someone is encouraged here, a part of that story traces back to you.

Love you. ❤️

  1. Thank you for sharing the faith of your Uncle. I had an Uncle like that, too. Encouraging us to listen to the small prompts God puts in our hearts without knowing the full outcome. I pray I can be that for my grandchildren as well as others!

  2. Thank you, Mo. You will always be our big sister…I love you. Thank you for continuing dad’s legacy.

  3. Mo – a chapter closes but a book is opened further! Such a wonderful legacy – we are broken people but Christ builds amazing things from our brokenness. Bless you dear friend.
