I Choose Today...

I Choose Today Trust Over Understanding

One day, I was at an event where a woman had a medical emergency. She needed immediate attention from the emergency responders who had just arrived. As they were setting up their equipment, a young boy stepped in, trying to understand what was happening. He began asking questions of the people around the woman who were trying to aid her while waiting for the emergency response. This boy even asked questions of the woman herself, who was semi-unresponsive. Finally, a member of his family came to guide him away so the professionals could handle the situation, as they knew what to do.

While the boy only wanted to understand, he was actually in the way of those who could help the woman in distress.

Proverbs 3:5 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.” In other words, we need to stop trying to understand, step out of the way, and trust God in our lives.

True trust in God means choosing to rely not on our limited human understanding but on the deeper, Spirit-given insight He provides. The Holy Spirit offers us understanding that aligns with God’s wisdom, guiding us in ways that go beyond our own reasoning. In moments of uncertainty, we can choose to lean into this divine understanding, allowing God’s perspective to lead us where our own thoughts might fall short.

Leaning on our own understanding can only take us so far. We are limited in our abilities and knowledge. Trusting God with all our hearts is an invitation to stop trying to figure out God’s ways; to stop trying to decide if His ways or His plans meet our approval.

If we looking for God to show up in a certain way, we might actually miss Him showing up at all. When we put parameters on how we think He should act, we limit Him to our own understanding and miss what He has for us. We won’t be looking for it; we won’t expect Him to show up in a way beyond our thoughts and understanding.

Only by trusting God and allowing Him to invade our hearts and minds can we experience true transformation, healing, and the perfect solutions to our circumstances and problems. We need to get out of the way and let God take care of these things in His ways, in His time.

Today, I encourage you to pause and reflect: where in your life are you leaning on your own understanding, perhaps trying to ‘figure out’ God’s plans? Ask Him to reveal any areas where you need to release control and invite His perfect wisdom to work. Take a moment in prayer, surrendering your need to understand and instead choosing to trust that He is working things out for your good, even if you can’t yet see it. Trust over understanding—make that your choice today.

    • Yes, how many times have gotten into God’s way trying to understand? But I am thankful for a loving Father who brings me out of the way so He can do His best work. Amen!
