“So he got up and came to his father...” Luke 15:20a AMP
I find that I am a procrastinator. I even took pride in my ability to excel at tasks when done last minute (because I procrastinated). Then the Lord convicted me to be a servant of action. He made me realize that my procrastination, which is essentially delayed obedience, amounted to disobedience.
I heard a saying “delayed obedience is disobedience.” This phrase convicted me. I tried to intentionally teach this “rule” when raising my daughter. I never counted to three because that promotes delaying obedience. I did this bc I wanted her to live a life that was immediately responsive to God’s voice, to God’s prompting, to God’s calling,… to God.
God, in His proactive love, demonstrated His mercy to us even while we were still sinners. He took action by sending Christ to die for us, providing a way for our reconciliation with Him after the fall in the garden. I want to be an imitator of God by being a person of action, not of procrastination.
This is not different when it comes to my sin. When I have my AHA moment (sudden awakening) and I am brutally honest with myself and the sin in my life, I need to take immediate action: run, flee from the sin, seek repentance, return to the God, who went into immediate action and made a way by sending Jesus.
Is my tendency to procrastinate still here? Yes. But I am intentional about not delaying my obedience so I don’t sit in my sin without my God. So, I need to get up and go to my Father.

I’m a procrastinator too…in some things. Sometimes because I have analysis paralysis, other times because I just don’t want to do whatever it is I need to do or I’m overwhelmed by it. I also heard years ago a teaching on “delayed obedience”. Thank you for the reminder to go to my Father immediately, not delay in what the Holy Spirit is prompting me to do. As parents we can so relate to wanting the best for our children. That is what our heavenly father wants for us too.❤️
I too suffer from analysis paralysis (that is one of the schemes of the devil). But through my journey with this blog, God has taught me to be a person of action versus procrastination. Immediate obedience is learned and practiced discipline! Still learning!!!
Amen!!! I teach my children immediate obedience what I have to remember, am I doing that with our Father?
I think that’s one of the benefits of being a parent is understanding that we just want what’s best for our kids. That corresponds to our obedience to our heavenly father because he only wants what’s best for us. That’s a beautiful thing.
