I Choose Today to Renew My Mind

Transformation doesn’t begin when our circumstances change, it begins when our thinkingdoes. Our lives move in the direction of our most dominant thoughts, which is why Paul’s reminder in Romans 12:2 is so powerful:

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.”

So often, we focus on changing what we do before changing how we think. But the real work of transformation happens in the mind. That’s where God reshapes how we see ourselves, our situations, and even Him.

I’ve learned that the enemy can’t control my life, but he can influence my thoughts, and my thoughts influence everything else. He does what he did in the garden: twist truth just enough to create doubt, shame, or fear. He uses guilt to weigh us down and comparison to keep us small.

I’ll never forget walking into a women’s leadership conference filled with about a hundred women. From the moment I stepped in, I felt like an imposter. I wondered how I ended up there, surrounded by so many women who seemed smarter, stronger, and more confident than me. During worship, I bowed my head and whispered, “God, I don’t belong here.”

And that’s when the Lord spoke gently to my heart: “You didn’t put yourself here. I put you here. And if I put you here, you are exactly where you belong.”

That moment changed everything. The shame I carried began to lose its hold. I realized I had spent years trying to earn belonging, to prove myself worthy, to fit into spaces God had already prepared for me. That day, He invited me to see myself differently, to see myself as chosen, called, and capable through Him.

That’s what mind renewal looks like. It’s when God’s truth starts to replace the lies that have shaped how we see ourselves. It’s when we stop striving to be enough and start believing that in Christ, we are enough.

Paul gives us a beautiful picture of this process in Philippians 4:6–9. He begins with what we all know too well, anxiety.

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”

When we pray, we exchange anxiety for peace. And peace doesn’t come because everything suddenly makes sense, it comes because our hearts are aligned with God’s truth. His peace becomes the guard at the gate of our minds, keeping out fear and lies that try to creep back in.

Then Paul tells us to fix our thoughts on what is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, and admirable. When we start to drift into worry or doubt, that’s our cue to shift our focus, to fix our minds on what reflects His goodness instead. And Paul doesn’t stop there; he says to practice it.

Renewal becomes transformation when we put truth into practice. When we choose to meditate on what’s true instead of what’s troubling, something changes inside us.

Maybe for you, this process feels slow. You take one step forward and then find yourself sliding back into old thought patterns. That’s okay. Renewal is rarely instant, it’s formed through repetition, surrender, and grace. The same God who began this work in you promises to carry it through to completion.

Friend, you are not who you used to be. You are being transformed, thought by thought, day by day. Let His peace stand guard over your mind this week. And when the lies get loud, remember: the truth of God’s Word is louder still.

So today, don’t just try harder. Think higher.

Keep choosing today to renew your mind, one thought, one step, one day at a time.
