I Choose Today to Rely on God’s Strength

Strength… The thing about strength is that it is necessary for life. There is not only physical strength, emotional strength, and mental strength, but also spiritual strength. The dictionary defines strength as “the capacity of an object or substance to withstand great force or pressure.” How can we possibly withstand great forces or pressures in our daily lives? The same way Jesus did.

As we continue our study on the seven-fold Spirit in Isaiah 11:2, I want to look at the Spirit of Might and how we can apply it in our lives. Isaiah 11:2 describes seven attributes of the Holy Spirit that empowered Jesus as He came to fulfill the law of sacrifice and restore our relationship with God forever. In order to do this, He needed supernatural, divine strength.

Jesus operated in supernatural strength—physically, spiritually, and in authority over creation. When He was in the wilderness for forty days, He was strengthened to overcome spiritual attacks and resist temptation. Luke 4:1-14 tells us that He was led by the Spirit into the wilderness and returned in the power of the Spirit. That same Spirit strengthens us to resist the enemy. Ephesians 6:10-11 reminds us that we are not left powerless in spiritual battles.

Another example of Jesus walking in divine strength was when He rebuked the wind and the waves, and creation obeyed Him. Mark 4:39 says that He spoke, and the storm became still. That same Spirit of Might is at work in our lives today, giving us faith to trust in God’s power over the storms we face.

Jesus’ boldness and strength in His ministry came from the Spirit’s power, and we can rely on that same strength in our challenges. We see this in Paul’s life too. He endured hardship after hardship but never gave up because he was strengthened by God’s might. In 2 Corinthians 12:9-10, Paul says, “But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” Paul understood that true strength wasn’t found in himself but in God’s power working through him.

I recently did something that required emotional strength to get through. I didn’t know if I could endure, so I prayed that the Spirit would give me the strength to complete the task. He showed up in amazing ways. Not only did I complete the task (albeit with some tears), but I also healed places in my heart that were still broken. The Spirit can and will surprise us if we let Him. What I once saw as a challenge became a moment of deeper trust in God’s strength rather than my own.

All this to say—we are not alone in our struggles or our weaknesses. Because of Christ’s sacrifice and resurrection, we are grafted into the family of God and have access to the same Spirit of Might that empowered Jesus.

Ephesians 6:10 says, “Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.

Where in your life do you need God’s strength today? Are you trying to walk in your own power instead of relying on His? Take a moment to invite the Holy Spirit to fill you with divine might, just as He empowered Jesus and His followers before you.

  1. I am so thankful for Holy Spirit! He has given me strength when my life has turned upside down. When I am overwhelmed with circumstances, He is with me. Without Him, I would surely have collapsed under the weight. But, He is faithful and He is good.
