I Choose Today to Obey, Even When It’s Uncomfortable

As I was reading Acts 10 during a devotional, something caught my attention. It wasn’t just the vision Peter had, it was what came next.

Because what God asked Peter to do wasn’t just unusual.

It was uncomfortable.

Eat With Sinners

“The next day as Cornelius’s messengers were nearing the town, Peter went up on the flat roof to pray. It was about noon, and he was hungry. But while a meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance.…Then a voice said to him, ‘Get up, Peter; kill and eat them.’

‘No, Lord,’ Peter declared. ‘I have never eaten anything that our Jewish laws have declared impure and unclean.’

But the voice spoke again: ‘Do not call something unclean if God has made it clean.’” Acts 10:9–15, NLT

In the Old Testament, God gave His people specific instructions to remain set apart. Dietary laws and boundaries around marriage with surrounding nations were meant to protect them from idolatry and preserve the lineage through which the Messiah would come. It wasn’t about superiority, it was about protection and purpose.

But something radical shifts in Acts 10.

Until this point, the gospel had reached Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria, just as Jesus said it would in Acts 1:8. But how could it reach “the ends of the earth” if the apostles still saw Gentiles as outsiders?

God made a way.

And He chose Peter, the same man who once denied Jesus, to be the one to cross that boundary. But first, Peter’s heart and mindset had to be transformed.

God used a rooftop vision, a Gentile soldier’s faith, and a Spirit-led invitation to change everything. What seemed like a minor meal became a major moment in kingdom history.

Peter obeyed.

He walked into Cornelius’s house, probably unsure and uncomfortable. And as he spoke about Jesus, the Holy Spirit fell, even on the Gentiles. That moment became the beginning of the gospel reaching the rest of us.

And here I am, here we are, believers today because someone once said yes to God in a moment that felt unfamiliar.

That’s the beauty of Spirit-led obedience.

It rarely looks flashy.

It usually feels uncomfortable.

But it is always powerful.

“So I came without objection as soon as I was sent for.”  Acts 10:29

I wonder how often God invites us into moments like this.

Moments that stretch us.

Moments that challenge our assumptions.

Moments that move us outside our comfort zones.

Small acts of obedience, especially when they go against cultural expectations, can ripple into eternity. What might feel insignificant to us could be the very thing God uses to open the door for someone else’s salvation, healing, or freedom.

So today, attune your ear to the Holy Spirit. Let Him guide your heart and mind. Then obey, even if it stretches you. Even if it costs you comfort. Even if it feels small. Even if it is uncomfortable.

Because you never know whose life might change forever if you do.

Today’s Step:

Open your heart to someone outside your usual circle. Invite them to coffee, ask their story, or simply show them they matter. As you do, ask the Holy Spirit to lead the conversation, and trust that your obedience could echo further than you can imagine.
