I Choose Today to Learn to Listen

In our previous sessions, we’ve explored what to talk to God about and how to talk to Him. Today, let’s dive into the different ways God speaks to us and how we can listen.

In any relationship, communication is crucial. We invest time and effort to learn how to speak effectively and, just as importantly, how to be a better listener. Our relationship with God is no different—it requires intentionality to understand how to communicate and listen when He speaks. But how does God speak to us? Here are some ways:

Through His Word (the Bible):

– 2 Timothy 3:16-17: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness…”

– Psalms 119:105 NLT: “Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.” God gives us guidance, step by step, as we spend time with Him.

Through Teachers and Pastors:

– Ephesians 4:11-12: “So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service…” Sometimes, God uses a pastor’s message, a teacher’s insight, or even a blogger’s post to speak to us.

Through Other People:

– Proverbs 27:17: “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” God often uses family, friends, and even strangers to share truth, encouragement, and love.

Through Prayer and Worship:

– Jeremiah 29:12-13: “Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you…” In prayer and worship, we can hear God’s voice and feel His presence.

Through Nature and Creation:

– Psalm 19:1-2: “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands…” The beauty of creation can remind us of God’s creativity and His care for us.

Through the Holy Spirit:

– John 16:13: “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth…” The Holy Spirit provides guidance and wisdom in our daily lives.

God speaks to us in many ways. The real question is, are we listening? He uses various means to communicate, build a relationship with us, instruct us, and love us. Are we positioning ourselves to listen?

Are you ready to deepen your relationship with God by becoming a better listener? Take a moment today to reflect on how God has been speaking to you. Choose one method—through Scripture, prayer, or nature—and spend some intentional time listening for His voice. Share your experiences or questions in the comments below, and let’s grow together in recognizing and responding to His guidance.

  1. The amazing thing is that God would even want to speak to me! That He wants a relationship with me! I’m learning every day how to hear His voice more clearly and it is so wonderful! Yes, take time to let Him speak to you. Let Him put His loving arms around you and just rest in Him.
