I Choose Today...

I Choose Today to Hear God’s Whisper

Have you ever had someone whisper something to you? You know, you are in a meeting, or a crowded place and someone wants to tell you something that is just for your ears? The words are so important to the whisperer that they felt compelled to share their message at that very moment. In the midst of life bustling around, they want to tell you something significant.

How do you posture yourself in order to hear the whispered words?

You probably lean (get closer) into the whisperer ever so slightly; maybe with your head and ear. You may close your eyes in a focused attempt to hear better. You drown out the noise around you, quieting your mind, so you can concentrate on the message. You don’t want to miss a word of the whispered message.

In this moment, there is an intimacy between you and the whisperer. A moment where it is just a conversation for the two of you. Can you imagine this scenario? I’m sure you have been in this situation before, so it is not too difficult to imagine.

We know the feeling of intimacy a shared whisper creates when experienced with another, but what about knowing that experience with your Heavenly Father; your Abba? Can you imagine what it is like to hear God whispering to you? Have you experienced it?

Elijah had firsthand knowledge. Even though he was somewhere he wasn’t supposed to be (because he let fear overtake him), God got his attention with a whisper:

And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper.

And do you know what Elijah did? He postured himself to hear from God: “When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And a voice said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 1 Kings 19:12-13 NLT.

Even with all the other distractions like the wind, the earthquake, and the fire, it seemed Elijah knew what he needed to do in order to hear God’s whispers; to hear Him speak to him in their intimate way.

God wants that same intimacy with you and with me. He wants us to position ourselves to not only hear Him speak but to know His voice.

Today, take a moment to quiet your surroundings and your mind. Lean in closer to God, just as you would to a whisperer. Open your heart to His gentle whisper and listen for His voice. Whether through prayer, scripture, or a quiet moment, make space to experience the intimate conversation He desires with you. How will you choose to hear God’s whisper today?
