I Choose Today to Follow God’s Guidance

Have you ever faced a big decision and wondered what to do next? We all have. But before taking any step—big or small—Jesus always sought counsel from the Father.

As we continue exploring the seven attributes of the Holy Spirit in Isaiah 11:2, today we’re focusing on the Spirit of Counsel. This aspect of the Holy Spirit enables us to receive God’s guidance and offer godly counsel to others—just as Jesus did throughout His ministry.

Luke 6:12-13 records one of these moments:
“One day soon afterward Jesus went up on a mountain to pray, and he prayed to God all night. At daybreak he called together all of his disciples and chose twelve of them to be apostles…”

Before making one of the biggest decisions in His ministry—choosing His twelve apostles—Jesus spent the entire night in prayer. He sought the Father’s wisdom and guidance, ensuring that every step aligned with God’s will.

But Jesus didn’t just seek counsel for Himself—He was also filled with the Holy Spirit so He could guide, teach, and counsel others. After His baptism, He was led by the Spirit into the wilderness (Luke 4:1) and spoke with authority because He was filled with the Spirit without limit (John 3:34). Everything He did—His teachings, corrections, and counsel—was Spirit-led.

This is why Psalm 32:8 has ministered to me so deeply:
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.”

Before I write this blog or record a podcast, I seek and receive the Spirit’s counsel so I can teach and encourage others. I don’t even suppose for a second that I can do this ministry on my own—I am fully dependent on His wisdom and guidance.

Jesus sought counsel, received it, and then gave it to others. That’s the pattern we are called to follow. Just as Jesus received from the Father and gave to others, we are called to receive the Spirit’s counsel and share it as well.

Where in your life do you need the Spirit’s counsel today? Take a moment to pray and invite Him to lead you, just as Jesus did.

  1. I am so thankful that God doesn’t just leave us on our own to make decisions. He has provided His Word…so much wisdom there…and Holy Spirit…such an amazing Presence!

    • Yes, and just like Jesus was lead by the Spirit, by intentionally seeking, we too can and should do the same. His presence is amazing!
