I Choose Today...

I Choose Today to Cling to Our Jesus

When we are going through suffering, pain, loss, tragedy, trauma, it can seem like there is no hope, no way past this pain, no end. And maybe one of the worst feelings of all is feeling like we are alone.

I am intimately acquainted with all of these emotions; all of these feelings.

I know what it feels like to be in the waters of grief. A friend of mine explained grief this way, “Grief is like waves; sometimes the waves are low and just tickle our feet, but other times the waves are so high that they nearly drown us.” When I lost my son to SIDS, the waves of grief were relentless. Some days, I could only manage to whisper His name through the tears. But even then, I knew I wasn’t alone.

What do we do with all these overwhelming emotions and the ache of feeling alone? We call out to the One who walks with us. Call to the One who bore our suffering on the cross. Our Jesus.

There is a song called Our Jesus, by Amanda Cook (link below). In the chorus she sings,

“Oh, how gracious is the God who came to us

How wonderful and righteous is His love

Our Jesus

Oh, through the suffering and the hatred of the cross

He gathered every hope we thought was lost

Our Jesus”

When the waves come, whether gentle or overwhelming, I’ve learned that calling out to Jesus doesn’t always change the circumstance, but it changes me. His presence shifts my heart from despair to hope, even if just for a moment.

When I am walking through the valley of death and sorrow, I choose our Jesus. When I don’t feel like I can take one more breath, I choose our Jesus. When I don’t know what tomorrow will bring, I choose our Jesus. When it seems like there is no hope to be found, He gathers every lost hope.

The Bible promises in Isaiah 43:2 – “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.”

I’ve learned that choosing Jesus isn’t a one-time decision—it’s a moment-by-moment surrender. When the waves rise, I choose Him again. And again. And every time, He meets me with grace and gathers my hope.

If you’re walking through grief or feel overwhelmed by life’s waves, know this: you are not alone. Call on our Jesus. Even when you feel too weak to hold on, He is holding every piece of your heart and gathering every lost hope. Let Him meet you right where you are today.

Even in the fiercest storm, He is there—our Jesus, always gathering every lost hope.
