I Choose Today to Change My Spiritual Wardrobe

God’s Word is rich with practical wisdom for daily life. In his letter to the Colossians (3:12-14), Paul paints a clear picture of how we are called to interact with others: “Since God chose you to be the holy people He loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.”

In a world where being quick to judge, offend, or harbor resentment is common, God calls us to walk a different path—a path that stands in stark contrast to our culture. We are asked to change our spiritual wardrobe and dress in qualities that reflect Christ’s character.

Let’s break down what that looks like in our lives:

Make allowances for others: This means giving grace when others fall short. None of us are perfect, and offering forgiveness can create space for healing and growth in our relationships.

Forgive freely: Forgiveness isn’t just a suggestion, it’s a command. Letting go of grudges and bitterness frees us to experience the peace that only comes through reconciliation.

Show kindness, even when it’s difficult: True kindness shines brightest when it’s undeserved. It’s about responding with compassion, even to those who might not extend the same courtesy.

Practice gentleness: There is great strength in gentleness. It involves treating others with care and empathy, avoiding harshness in our words and actions.

Be humble: Humility isn’t about thinking less of ourselves but thinking of ourselves less. When we place the needs of others before our own, we reflect Christ’s servant heart.

Extend mercy: Mercy is about withholding judgment, even when it’s justified. It mirrors the way God continually offers us grace instead of punishment.

Exercise patience: This means waiting with a calm and peaceful spirit, even when circumstances—or people—test our limits. Patience reflects trust in God’s timing and work in our lives.

This can seem overwhelming, like a tall order. And it is—if we try to do it in our own strength. But when we invite the Holy Spirit to work in us, He enables us to make these changes, day by day, from the inside out.

“Holy Spirit, help us to clothe ourselves in Your character. Shape our hearts and minds to reflect Your love and mercy, so we can be ambassadors for Your kingdom. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.”

Today, take a moment to reflect on what ‘spiritual clothes’ you’re wearing. Is there an area where you need to make a change? Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal one attribute—mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience—that you can intentionally ‘put on’ this week. As you do, trust that God will guide and empower you to live out His love in a transformative way.
