I Choose Today...

I Choose Today to be a good gift giver

I love Christmas. I love the twinkly lights, the gathering together with family, friends, and co-workers to celebrate the birth of Christ. One of my favorite things is to buy gifts for the people in my family. I have a rule, “buy what they want, not what they need.” This gives me so much joy to give them something they want to open up on Christmas morning. It is so much fun for me to give gifts!

I remember one year I wanted to buy my daughter a diamond ring for her middle finger. I wanted it to be classic, to stand the test of time, so she would want to wear it for years to come. I searched for the right one and finally found one that I thought she would like. She absolutely loved it! That was 13 years ago and she still wears it whenever she can. It brought me so much joy to give it to her.

God loves to give good and perfect gifts to His children (James 1:17). I am sure it delights Him when we use the gifts He gives with joy! Gifts given by God are to be used to leave a legacy for the Kingdom of God! These gifts are not for ourselves, but according to 1 Peter, these gifts are used to serve others:

”God has given each of you a gift from His great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.“ ‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭4‬:‭10‬ ‭NLT‬‬

What better way to celebrate the ultimate gift of salvation – the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ – than to bless others by using our gifts to serve others!

Over the next few weeks, I will be talking about the good and perfect gifts God has given to each and every one of us. Join me in the celebration of the season of gift giving by learning what God’s gifts are and how He wants us to use them.

  1. There is something so touching about getting a gift that shows that the person really knows you. My daughter, Rachel, is especially good at knowing just the right gift to give. Because I was raised in Brazil as a missionary kid, I love both Brazil and America. For my birthday this year, she gave me a special dual country flag. It was so special because I know she really understands me.
Gift giving is a wonderful way to let someone know how much you love them. And, God knew exactly what gift to give to show how much He loves!

    • That is such a special gift. It is truly taking an interest in knowing the heart of the receiver that makes the giver of the gift so impactful. Rachel is good at this for sure.

And so is our Lord. He knows our hearts and the best gifts to give us! So much love!
