I Choose Today...

I Choose Today to change my clothes…

God’s Word is FULL of practical principles for living everyday life. In Paul’s letter to the Colossians, God illustrates how we are to receive and treat others with whom we come in contact. Paul instructs, “Since God chose you to be the holy people He loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.” How counter-culture are these instructions? Where being offensive, offended, and hostile are all the rage (no pun intended), God instructs us once again to go against the grain and do the unexpected: Make allowances for one another; In this text, “make allowances for one another” means being understanding and forgiving of each other’s faults, shortcomings, or mistakes. It suggests a willingness to be patient and considerate, recognizing that nobody is perfect and that people may occasionally err or fall short of expectations. It encourages giving forgiveness, grace, and mercy to one another. Forgive: In the context of the text, “forgive” means to pardon or let go

I Choose Today to focus on my destiny

I just love Simon Peter. Peter was the most bold, outspoken, and enthusiastic of all the disciples. He was the first to put himself out there for God; to take a stand, to be bold in how he felt, to be a leader among his peers. But even Peter lost his courage when he took his focus off God, as illustrated in Matthew 14:30-31,  “But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?” I surmise that Jesus was teaching Peter, the other disciples, and you and me that in order to achieve anything for Christ, we need to keep our focus squarely on Him. Jesus knew what was in store for Peter and He was preparing him for his destiny. Jesus knew Peter would need to be bold, take a stand, and be courageous in his destiny: spreading the Good News of Jesus. Therefore, Jesus was preparing and reminding Peter where his strength, courage, boldness came from, so he could reach the destination (his destiny) for which God

I Choose Today to stay filled by God

This morning, my husband told me that the “Friends” actor, Matthew Perry, succumbed to his addictions and died in his hot tub. That is indeed very sad. But it also brought to mind the words/warning of Jesus I had just read in my quiet time: “When an evil spirit leaves a person, it goes into the desert, seeking rest but finding none. Then it says, ‘I will return to the person I came from.’ So it returns and finds its former home empty, swept, and in order. Then the spirit finds seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they all enter the person and live there. And so that person is worse off than before. That will be the experience of this evil generation.” Matthew‬ ‭12‬:‭43‬-‭45‬ ‭NLT‬‬ These verses are very interesting to me. I heard it once described as a person can work to get sin out of their life like addiction (drug, alcohol, sex, gambling, spending, gluttony, etc.), they are excited to be free of it. They work at cleaning out their house (soul, mind), but it is left empty. The problem lies when they do not fill it up with the power of the Holy Spirit,

I Choose Today to go at God’s pace

I am struggling though with God’s pace. I need to let go and allow Him to take the lead, rather than rushing ahead, which often leads to trouble. Paul understood the importance of letting the Lord set the pace and not getting ahead of God. He describes his experience after encountering Jesus on the road to Damascus to the Galatian church by saying, “…Then it pleased Him [God] to reveal His Son to me so that I would proclaim the Good News about Jesus to the Gentiles. When this happened, I did not rush out to consult with any human being… Instead, I went away into Arabia, and later I returned to the city of Damascus. Then three years later I went to Jerusalem…” Galatians‬ ‭1‬:‭15‬b-‭18‬ ‭NLT‬‬ Three years after Paul’s encounter with Jesus he went to Jerusalem. Three years before he felt God calling him into his ministry. Paul was an enthusiastic guy! He was a doer. He was known for his ability to take action. He was well known by all as the one who made it his mission to eliminate Christianity from the world! Paul was a “take no prisoners” kind of guy. So three years of

I Choose Today to use my sword

It is interesting to see that Satan uses the same tactic with Jesus that he did to Adam and Eve: manipulation. He is crafty. He is trying to use God’s Word against Jesus perverting and misdirecting the true meaning of it. Just like Matthew describes in chapter 4, “During that time the devil came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.”” (verse 3‬‬‬). It is the same thing he does with us. His tactics don’t change; they are the same. He is the master manipulator. So how do we combat the master manipulator? The same way Jesus did in chapter 4 of Matthew: He quotes/uses the Word of God! “But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”‭‭ Matthew‬ ‭4‬:‭4‬ ‭NLT‬‬ That is our offense, the Sword of the Spirit (which is the Word of God (Ephesians 6:17))! That gets me thinking about the importance of memorizing the Word of God! That way I will be ready take up the offensive by yielding the Sword of the Spirit when the devil
