I Choose Today...

I Choose Today to choose my words

Remember the childhood saying, ‘Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me’? Contrary to this phrase, we know that words have a profound impact, often causing deeper and longer-lasting hurt than physical pain. This truth is the reason why we need to use our words wisely when speaking to our loved ones, friends, and fellow believers. But it is especially important when we are engaging with non-believers. Paul talks about this in his letter to the Colossians’ church when he said, “Use your heads as you live and work among outsiders [unbelievers]. Don’t miss a trick. Make the most of every opportunity. Be gracious in your speech. The goal is to bring out the best in others in a conversation, not put them down, not cut them out.” Colossians‬ ‭4‬:‭5‬-‭6‬ ‭MSG‬‬ (emphasis mine) Paul urges gracious speech, aiming to encourage and bring out the best in others—a stark contrast to our human instincts. When faced with unkindness or attacks on our beliefs, our natural response is defensiveness. I confess, I’ve been guilty of this too! Yet, responding in kind doesn’t contribute to the kingdom of God; it may even harm our testimony. So how are

I Choose Today to be Thankful

As I sit here today, the day before Thanksgiving, writing this blog, I have been sick for over a week. Like “in bed, down for the count” sick. In a season of the year where we are supposed to give thanks, I am stuck inside without any family or friends to celebrate with, and on top of that, possibly causing my husband to miss out on a Thanksgiving feast! I remembered when a pastor (retired) at our church quoted Paul’s words to the Thessaloniki church, and it puts things into perspective. “Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians‬ ‭5‬:‭16‬-‭18‬ ‭NLT‬‬ You see, when the pastor was encouraging us to be thankful in all circumstances, he and his family were saying goodbye to his lovely wife. She was days away from going home to be with the Lord. He was thankful even though the circumstances were not good (in human eyes). If he can express his thankfulness to the Lord during this amazingly difficult season of life, I can be thankful even when I am sick. He reminded me that being thankful is

I Choose Today to be an Effective Listener

As you may or may not know, I was not afforded (nor was prepared) the opportunity to attend college when I was younger. So, during Covid, I took the opportunity to accomplish that goal. I was on a mission to get my classes done as quickly and efficiently as possible. So when I saw the class Effective Listening, I thought it would be an easy class. After all, I was a pretty good listener. Boy was I wrong! This class was so hard, but yet so rewarding. This class taught me several crucial aspects of effective listening. First, it emphasized the importance of being present in a conversation. Second, it highlighted the need to listen for a deep understanding of the speaker’s message, both verbally and non-verbally. Third, it stressed the significance of listening with compassion and empathy. Moreover, the class taught me to approach listening with intentionality. Demonstrating active listening through body language and short responses became a key takeaway. So many times, we listen only to voice our opinions, come up with a rebuttal, or to pretend we are listening but really not interested (which is usually obvious to the speaker/talker).  Sometimes we get angry or insulted by

I Choose Today to Know there is Purpose in Pain and Waiting

There is purpose in the waiting; there is purpose in the pain. There is an expression “it will be worth the wait.” Well, God ALWAYS shows us that His timing is worth the wait. The account of what happened when Lazarus dies (falls asleep) (John 11:1-44) shows us so much about Jesus and the power He has over death. He wanted to illustrate a point; He wanted to show the people (of the time and all those since) that He alone has the power and was sent to conquer death. It showed His divinity. But He also showed His humanity and love by having compassion for His friends’ pain. Which by weeping with them, showing compassion for them, comforting them, He illustrated how He would do the same for us. He was showing us how He responds to our pain. It seems to me that it is easy for us to understand that Jesus conquered death and that He is compassionate and understands our pain. But the waiting? We don’t get it. Am I on target or am I the only one who has a hard time understanding it? Just as Jesus was illustrating a point of His power over

I Choose Today to be mindful of God’s miracles

I love what a friend of mine said in our devotional together, “God is in the miracle business. Hallelujah! But you don’t get a miracle unless you need a miracle!” This couldn’t be more true! It seems to me that we have to exhaust all our efforts before God steps in to do “…through His mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.” That way He gets all the glory! If people see we do great things in our own power and strength, how does that make an impact for God’s power? We want our lives to point people to Him so they too will have a personal relationship with their Heavenly Father (through salvation through Jesus) and live eternally with Him. We want that for our kids, our loved ones, and honestly for everyone. But like my friend said, we need to be in need of a miracle, come to the end of ourselves, and allow God to show up and show off! Trust! Surrender! Wait! Miracle! All these things add up to giving God the glory in our love to point more people to Him! “Thank You, Father for always
