I Choose Today to Renew My Perspective

I’ve been starting my quiet time a little differently lately. Before I bring God my needs or questions or concerns, I’ve been writing down what I’m grateful for. Just a few simple lines. Nothing fancy. But it’s been surprising how deeply it resets my heart.

I want to come to Him with a thankful heart before I ask Him for anything else. Scripture is full of invitations to give thanks, not because God needs to hear it, but because we need to remember what’s still true, even when life feels uncertain.

Paul wrote, “Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances…” (1 Thessalonians 5:16–18). Not for all circumstances, but in them. There’s a difference.

James reminds us that “whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down from God our Father…” (James 1:17). Every good moment, every breath of relief, every small piece of joy, it all has a source. And it all traces back to Him.

David understood this better than most. His life was full of turmoil and pressure, yet he continually chose gratitude. He wrote, “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His faithful love endures forever” (Psalm 107:1). Gratitude anchored him when life felt heavy.

I recently heard a message on gratitude that helped me see thanksgiving differently. It isn’t just a polite spiritual gesture, gratitude actually transforms us. Spiritually, it attracts God’s presence. Mentally, it rewires our thoughts. Emotionally, it calms the storms inside us. Physically, it strengthens our bodies. Relationally, it softens our hearts. And financially, it positions us to steward what God gives with open hands. Gratitude truly changes everything.

It reminded me of something I wrote a while back in a blog titled “I Choose Today to Recognize Good.” I shared how every good thing traces back to God, even when life has felt tragic or traumatic. Romans 8:28 doesn’t say everything is good, it says God works good in all things for those who love Him. I’ve seen that in my own story, over and over again.

When we intentionally look for the good, we discover that we have reasons to give thanks, even in difficult seasons. Gratitude doesn’t erase pain, but it helps us see God in the middle of it.

Thanksgiving really comes down to three things: we give thanks to God, we give thanks to others, and we give to others so they can give thanks to God. Gratitude was never meant to stop with us, it flows through us.

There’s a quote I came across that sums up the heart of this: “Peaceful circumstances don’t create gratitude; gratitude creates peaceful circumstances.” Isn’t that true? Gratitude shifts the atmosphere inside of us. It doesn’t change everything around us, but it changes us.

So today, I want to pause and say something I don’t say nearly enough: I am deeply grateful for you. For every person who has listened to an episode, shared it, prayed for me, encouraged me, or simply pressed play. You have been part of how God has carried I Choose Today from a little seed in my heart to a podcast that reaches one heart at a time.

I thank God for you. Truly. Your support has meant more than you know.

Today’s Step:

Open your door, literally or symbolically, and acknowledge one good thing God has placed in your life today. Name it. Thank Him for it. Then tell someone why you’re grateful for them. Gratitude multiplies when it’s shared.
