I Choose Today to be Empowered by the Spirit

One of the most amazing things about the Bible—other than it being the very breath and essence of God—is that it is alive and active, working to transform our lives every single moment of every single day. When I read and study God’s Word, I often discover something new or have the Holy Spirit reveal a deeper meaning I hadn’t noticed before. This happened when I was reading Isaiah 11:1-2. The passage begins by describing the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ, as a Branch bearing fruit: “Out of the stump of David’s family will grow a shoot—yes, a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root.” This verse paints a beautiful picture of Jesus’ ministry, growing out of what appeared to be a lifeless stump and producing abundant fruit. The chapter continues by describing how the Holy Spirit would anoint Jesus with seven qualities, empowering Him to complete His mission and purpose on earth: “And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him—the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord [awe and reverence].” We see this prophecy fulfilled in John 1:32, where John the Baptist recounts

I Choose Today to Thank the Lord with My Life

Have you ever woken up with a song in your heart—a melody that carries you through the day? This morning was one of those moments for me. I woke up singing the chorus of This is How I Thank the Lord by Mosaic MSC (link to song at the end of this post). Moved by the lyrics, I played the song as part of my quiet time worship. And as I listened, I found myself deeply convicted: “So this is how I thank the Lord for saving me When I was weak, so I will sing This is how I thank the Lord for everything This is how I thank the Lord” The vocalist was showing her gratitude by using her gift—the very talent God gave her—to glorify Him. It made me pause and ask myself: Am I thanking the Lord by fully using the gifts He’s given me to glorify Him? One of the gifts God has given me is the ability to encourage others. I’ve written before about God’s motivational gifts, including the gift of encouragement. Romans 12 reminds us, “If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging” (Romans 12:8 NLT). I Choose Today to Rest Under His Hand

Psalm 139 is one of the most breathtaking pictures of God’s intimate love, care, strength, protection, and empowerment toward us: His beloved. It starts with the psalmist, David, acknowledging how intimately God knows him, the dumb things he does, acts, and says; and yet, God still adores him. So much so that in verse five, David describes God’s hand of cleansing on his head! “You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head.” (Psalms‬ ‭139‬:‭5‬ ‭NLT‬‬) This blessing signifies God personally bestowing favor, care and approval on His beloved. This is an intimate demonstration of God’s care, as though He is actively and continually giving His grace and goodness to His beloved. God’s hand is not passive; it is caring and protective from all sides, to include the future direction and guidance, as well as protection from the pain and lies of the past. I picture a loving parent with his hand on his child’s head as they walk along. This is a caring intimate gesture demonstrating Belonging: as the father rests his hand lovingly and gently on the child’s head. The child knows by the loving touch how much the father loves

I Choose Today to Seek Deliverance

Have you ever found yourself holding onto something that you know is weighing you down—fear, anxiety, guilt—but felt too paralyzed to let it go? If so, you’re not alone. Many of us cling to chains God never meant for us to bear. The good news is that God is a Deliverer, and He longs to set us free. Today, let’s explore how His promises invite us to cry out to Him and experience His transforming power. ““Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress. He led them from the darkness and deepest gloom; He snapped their chains.” (Psalms‬ ‭107‬:‭13‬-14). He delivered them from their distresses! What a promise! So why do we hold onto our chains, our fears, anxieties, addiction, tendencies? Do we think our chains will go away on their own, as Pharaoh did when he waited an entire day to ask for deliverance from the frogs? When asked by Moses when he (Pharaoh) wanted to be delivered from the plague, ““Do it tomorrow,” Pharaoh said.” (Exodus‬ ‭8‬:‭10‬a). I Choose Today to Stand in Awe

To “fear the Lord” comes with a lot of emotions. Are we supposed to be afraid of God? Is He a mean, harsh being just waiting for us to mess up so He can punish us? These are common questions, and I’ve wrestled with them myself, and I’ve learned that the answer is no. God is not a tyrant standing over us with a gavel, ready to strike. Instead, the “fear of the Lord” is an invitation to stand in awe of who He is—to recognize His holiness, power, and love in a way that shapes our lives. The idea of fear often brings negative images to mind, but the Bible shows us something different. The “fear of the Lord” isn’t about being terrified; it’s about reverence. It’s about living in awe of a God who is both holy and near. It’s the kind of reverence that makes you pause and marvel at the Creator of the universe, who also knows you intimately and loves you deeply.
